Erste und einzige Ausgabe, Venedig bei Nicolo Bascarini 1548. Originalbindung in Pergament mit handgeschriebenem Titel: „Tolomeo Geografia”.
Gastaldis Ptolemäus gilt als der erste Atlas der Neuen Welt, da er eine Reihe von Karten mit Teilen Nord- und Südamerikas enthält. Die meisten der 34 doppelseitigen Karten der Neuen Welt sind mit den damals neusten Erkenntnissen gefertigt worden. Darunter auch die berühmte „Tierra Nova”, eine Karte der Nordostküste Amerikas von Florida bis Labrador und die „Nueva Hispania Tabula Nona”, diese zeigt das Gebiet des Mississippi und Floridas und ist die erste separat gedruckte Karte dieser Region. Der schöne Taschenatlas enthält zudem auch die folgenden Karten, die „Arabia Felix - südliche Arabische Halbinsel” darstellen: „Tabula Africa IIII” (nach Ptolemäus), S. 33; „Della Persia Moderna” (moderne Karte von Gastaldi), S. 43; „Tabula sexta D`Asia” (Karte nach Ptolemäus – Arabia Felix), S. 44 und „Della Arabia Felix” (moderne Karte von Arabia Felix), S. 45.
Giacomo Gastaldi war ein italienischer Kartograf, Astronom und Ingenieur, der in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts in Venedig tätig war. Dieser Atlas war einer der ersten, der im Kupferstichverfahren gedruckt worden ist.
Seltene vollständige Ausgabe dieses schönen Taschenatlas von Giacomo Gastaldi. Alle Kupferstiche sind hervorragend auf feinem Bütten gedruckt, etwas fingerfleckig, bei der Tafel „Tabula Africae II“ eine Papierfehlstelle an der rechten unteren Seite. Originaler alter Pergamenteinband mit einigen Rissen und Flecken, alte Stempel eines Klosters (?) auf dem Titelblatt und der letzten Seite. Insgesamt sehr guter Zustand dieses schönen Sammlerstücks.

Gastaldi´s Ptolemy is consider the first atlas of the New World, it was the first to contain a series of maps with parts of North- and South America, the famous “Tierra Nova”, a map of Northeastern coast of American from Florida to Labrador based on the most up to date information available at the time. Most of the 34 double page maps of the New World are entirely new, include seven maps related to the Americas. Amongst these is the “Nueva Hispania Tabula Nona” showing the Mississippi and Florida area, which is the first separate printed map of the region. The beautiful pocket atlas also includes the following maps depicting Arabia Felix: „Tabula Africa IIII” (after Ptolemy), p. 33; „Della Persia Moderna” (modern map by Gastaldi), p. 43; „Tabula sexta D`Asia” (map after Ptolemy - Arabia Felix), p. 44 and „Della Arabia Felix” (modern map of Arabia Felix), p. 45.
Giacomo Gastaldi was an Italian cartographer, astronomer and engineer active in the second half of the 16. Century in Venice. This atlas was one of the first to be print in copperplate.
A very well preserved copy. Rare complete edition of this fine pocket atlas by Giacomo Gastaldi. All copper plates are excellent printed on fine handmade paper, few have finger prints, all are in very good condition accept Plate Tabula Africae II with paper lost at the right corner, original old vellum binding with some tears and spots, old stamps by a monastery (?) on title and last page. Altogether very fine condition of this early collectible pocket atlas.
