View of the holy town Benares, seen over the River Ganges. Varanasi or Benares is situated on the banks of the River Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is regarded by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains as a holy town and is one of the oldest towns of India.
