Celestial chart

"Coeli Stellati Christiani Haemisphaerium Prius ... apud Petrum Schenk et Gerardum Valk"

Beautiful celestial chart, the constellations are shown according to Christian symbolism after the concept of the Dutch astronomer Julius Schiller (1581-1627). He replaced the twelve zodiac signs with the twelve apostles, the constellations north of the zodiac by figures from the New Testament, and the constellations south of the zodiac by figures from the Old Testament.

Original coloured copper engraving after Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665) "Atlas Coelestis seu harmonia Macrocosmica“ by the cartographer Julius Schiller (1580-1627), published by Petrus Schenk & Gerhard Valk, Amsterdam 1708.

Map size: 44 x 51,5 cm

Decorative print with vibrant original colours on heavy paper, some soiling at the smoothed centre fold, altogether in very good condition.
