Carceri IV: The Grand Piazza

Design of a prison, sheet No.: 4, view through circular arcs on to the Piazza. In the foreground a variation of torture instruments, chains and ropes hanging at and between the pillars. A gruesome and atmospheric setting of an imaginary torture scene.

Copper engraving and etching by G.B. Piranesi (1720-1778), second state of the Roman edition c. 1761. This edition was extended by two new plates and had a reworking of the engraving. The Roman numbering was added in the upper left. Signed at the bottom right: Piranesi F. (ecit)

Sheet: 68,1 x B: 51,6 cm, Print size: 54,7 x 41,4 cm

Strong and high in contrast print on heavy paper, wide margins, smoothed centerfold (common).
