G.B. Piranesi - Paestum - View of the temple of Neptune

Vue du Temple de Neptune, Dieu tutélaire de l´ancienne Ville de Pesto

East-west view of the Greek Poseidon Temple with six doric columns in the entrance area. It was built 450 b.c. and sanctified to the goddess Hera. In the foreground farmers and grazing cows.

In the middle of the 18th century Piranesi made images of the rediscovered temples in Paestum.

Copper engraving and etching by G.B. Piranesi, Rome 1778, 48 cm x 70,7 cm

Nice strong and highly nuanced impression on strong laid paper, slim margins (as usual), the bottom margin (below the writing) is professionally remargined.

Planche X, Focillon 592, Ficacci 861
