Ogata Gekkô (1859-1920)

An old maple tree by the river in autumn. A design based on a Rimpa (or Rinpa) style painting by Sakai Hôitsu (1761-1828)

Signature: Gekkô mo

Seal: Gekkô

Publisher: (Matsuki Heikichi, Daikokuya, Tokyo)

Date: c. 1890-1910

Size: Shikishiban, 24 x 25,1 cm (overall).

Very good impression, excellent fresh colours, fine condition. The waves printed with silver mica, the foliage with partial pigment-oxidation. Untrimmed and unbacked.
Gekkô created a number of shikishi woodblock prints around 1900, most of them in a delicate painterly style, but also a few in the more abstract and stylized Rimpa (or Rinpa) manner, which experienced a revival (called Neo-Rimpa) at the time through artists like Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942). A rarely seen print, in which Gekkô used a byôbu painting by Sakai Hôitsu as a model.
