A big hissing tiger in front of bamboo.
Signature: Gosotei Toyokuni hitsu
Seal: Toyokuni
Publisher: Yamamotoya Heikichi (Eikyûdô), Edo
Censor: Kiwame
Date: c. 1820s
Size: Kakemono-e (vertical Ôban diptych), 72,7 x 24,2 cm (total size)
Very good impression in good colours, the white fur on the tiger’s breast printed with karazuri (embossing). Unbacked, two separate sheets. On bottom minimally and at the left margin somewhat trimmed. Paper tanned. A horizontal centrefold on each sheet. Slightly soiled in places, above the bamboo some fine hand drawn ink lines. Lower sheet with few small paper thinnings from verso. Good overall condition.
A very rare print with a powerful tiger image. Kakemono-e prints like this one were often mounted as hanging scrolls and displayed, and are therefore rarely perfectly preserved.
