Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) (1786-1865)

The young Kumoinojô (Yûgiri) and the young lady Karigane are secretly attracted to each other. Both of them on separate sides of a byobu, shyly waiting what the other one will do. The painting on the byobu, a pair of mandarin ducks, symbolizing their affection for each other.
