Utagawa Toyokuni II (Toyoshige) (1777-1835)

The courtesan Hinanosuke, from the Daikoku-ya family, is sitting nearby a brazier while smoking a pipe. In the round cartouche, which is printed in blue and has the form of a Toshidama ring, there is a monk, probably Kûkai (Kôbô Daishi), standing at the Kôya river, in the background the temple at the Kôya-san.

Series/Title: Fûzoku Mutamagawa – Kôya no Tamagawa (Manners and customs at the six Jewel Rivers – the Kôya Jewel River)

Signature: Toyokuni ga, in the cartouche: Toyotoshi (a pupil of Toyokuni)

Publisher: Izumiya Ichibei

Censor's seal: Aratame

Date: early 1830s

Size: Oban, 37,3 x 25,5 cm

Very good impression and colours. Lower left margin somewhat uneven, lower right corner neatly repaired. Very nice picture of a courtesan from a rare series.
