Utagawa Kunimasa II (Kunimune II, 1792-1857) or Utagawa Kunisada II (Kunimasa III, 1823-1880)

Elegant ladies are carried by nude rustic porters on platforms through the Oi river, Mount Fuji in the background.

Title: Oigawa no zu (View of the Oi river)

Series: Tôkaidô gojûsan tsugi (53 stations of the Tokaido Road)

Signature: Ichijusai Kunimasa ga (right and left), Kunimasa ga (centre)

Publisher: Daikokuya Heikichi

Censors: Hama and Magome

Date: 1849-52

Size: Oban triptych, each print 37 x 25,5 cm

Perfect impression and colours. Untrimmed, not mounted and single sheets not put together. Just a few tiny creases and two small water stains, otherwise perfect condition. Small red (collector's?) seal on each back side.

Very rare prints, esp. in this nice condition. Till now only two more items of these triptych are proved: MFA Boston (as Kunisada II), Bigelow Coll. No 11.38784a-c, and a second one in the collection of the Shizuoka Prefectural Central Library Inv. No K915-108-054-007 (which is in a poor condition).

The attribution of the signature Kunimasa to Kunisada II seems doubtful, if it's safe to assume that Kunisada II used the go Kunisada from 1846. On the other hand it is assumed that Kunimasa II signed as Kunimune in his later years. Other titles of this Tokaido Road series are not known till now.
