Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825)

Two beauties with the attributes of courtiers, as part of the entourage of a travelling daimyo, shown in a spring landscape with yellow flowering mountain roses at a riverside. Part of a multipiece series, a mitate (parody) scene. It probably shows the crossing of the Ide Tamagawa (Ide Jewel River) by Ariwara no Narihira.

Signature: Toyokuni ga

Censor: Kiwame

Publisher: Tadari (Tadaya Rihei)

Date: ca. 1810

Very nice impression, very nice fresh colours, printed on very good paper, not trimmed. Spot at the edge of the kimono of the lady at the right side, margins a little bit soiled and worn, a few smaller wormholes at upper margin, neatly restored, otherwise very good condition. Rare item.
