Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915)

Blossoming plum trees on a bright night in Tsukigase (near Nara), in the valley of the Nabari river.

Title: Tsukigase Okunotani (The inner valley at Tsukigase)

Series: Nihon meishô zue (Views of the Famous Sights of Japan)

Seal: Kiyo, Chika

Publisher: Matsuki Heikichi (Daihei, Daikokuya), Tokyo

Date: Meiji 30 (1897), February

Size: Vertical Ôban, 33,9 x 21,8 cm (image)

Excellent impression and colours with visible wood grain. Retains old album backing. Very good condition. Unidentified red (collector’s?) seals in and alongside the text cartouche. The only image in this series which is printed in shades of black ink (sumizuri-e), with only a little bit of light blue added in the waves of the river; the red artist's seals and title cartouche making a lovely contrast here.
