Utagawa Hiroshige II (1826-1869)

A gentleman and a lady enjoying the view of the river and Ryôgoku Bridge from the veranda of an inn on the Sumidagawa, during a meeting of painters and calligraphers. Inside the room hangs a just-completed painting of an eagle on a rock, signed "Shôgetsu"; on the floor below bowls of paint and water.

Title: Shogakai sekijō - Ryōgoku-bashi (A gathering of calligraphers and painters).

Series: Tôto sanjûrokkei (Thirty-six views of the Eastern Capital, i.e. Edo).

Signature: Hiroshige ga

Original Japanese colour woodblock print. Size: Vertical Ôban, 34.2 x 23.1 cm (image).

Very nice impression and colours. Unbacked, with full margins. A faint spot in left margin, a small paper thinning in upper left margin, in the other upper corner verso a small paper mounting remnant. Overall very nice condition. Red collector’s seal in bottom left corner.
