Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825)

The famous kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan I (later Nakamura Utaemon III) in a highly dramatic scene of the drama „Imoseyma Onna Teikin“. Kanawa Gorô Imakuni, disguised as the fisherman and messenger Fukashichi, dodging the spears of his enemies.

Fine impression with very good colours. Minimally trimmed margins, no backing. On the left margin some tiny pinholes and two worm holes (restored). In the right bottom corner slightly smudged. In the blue Kamishimo of the hero a lighter spot due to printing.

Very rare depiction of this very expressive scene from the popular drama. We found only one other copy of this woodblock print in the Memorial Theatre Museum of the Waseda University, No. 100-2975
