Antique Chinese export folding fan from Canton (Guangzhou). So called Mandarin-Fan

Chinese folding fan with fine gouache paintings on paper.

Front: In vibrant colours a dragon-dance at the imperial palace framed by ornamental bordures.

Back: "Boys games" surrounded by a beautiful landscape.

The faces of the figures are formed out of ivory plates and are delicately painted and appliqued on the fan, the clothes are made of colourful silk.

Leaf made of paper. Fan´s skeleton is made of black-lacquer. The wide sticks are decorated with a painting in two different shades of gold. The guard sticks are carved and also painted with gold. When the fan is opened the painting on the sticks shows an idyllic garden scene.
