Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861)

Goldfish in a pool of water threatened by a greedy cat, a parody of the tale of the cat demon.

Title: Hyakumonogatari (One hundred ghost stories)

Series: Kingyo zukushi (All kinds of goldfish)

Signature: Chô-ô-rô Kuniyoshi giga (…drawn for fun..)

Date: first 1839-42, here a contemporary colour woodblock print reproduction (fukkoku)

Colour woodblock print. Size: Vertical Chûban, 26 x 19,2 cm (overall)

Very good impression, fresh colours, excellent condition.

Early editions from this parodistic goldfish series are hardly to be found today and even only in very few museum collections (this one e.g. Tokyo National Museum A-10569_5479 and Philadelphia Museum of Art 1946-51-77) and therefore practically only available as reproductions.
