Isoda Koryûsai (1735-1790)

A young man sitting in front of an open verandah, absorbed in playing the hand drum (tsuzumi). A girl tries to slip him a letter in passing. In the background a summer landscape with flying birds, on top of the scene a poem in band of clouds.

Signature: Koryûsai ga

Date: c. 1770

Size: Vertical Chuban, 22,2 x 15,6 cm

Excellent impression in good colours, with gaufrage. Likely some trimming. Minor signs of age as weak creases, only minimal soiling. Top margin well restored. Overall very nice condition.

A charming and very rare work by the artist. Possibly identical with the print listed by Allen Hockley, The Prints of Isoda Koryûsai. Seattle/London 2003, p. 273, as no. 99 (allegedly signed Koryû)
